You play as a chicken named Alfred. Alfred must navigate bizarre levels full of telephones, cheese and other strange surroundings to collect balloons so he can proceed. While on the ground, Alfred can walk, jump, and peck. While in the air, he can dive bomb. Dive bombing enemies will destroy them. Dive bombing springs will propel Alfred much higher. If he does not hit an enemy or a spring, Alfred will comically get his beak stuck in the ground for a moment.
No one I knew asked for a copy of "Alfred Chicken" for Christmas back in the day, but we didn't know what we were missing. It's stress-free fun. The "floaty" nature of gravity takes some of the pressure off of landing on platforms. The dive-bomb drill attack is very satisfying - in the event an enemy happens to be standing where you might have wanted to land. Alfred wears a snorkel underwater and transforms into a spaceship when fighting certain bosses. The indulgence of weird, funny little design ideas is strong with this one. The people who made this game cared a lot about it, and it shows.
